Sarah is a proud graduate of Arlington ISD schools (Foster, Gunn, & Bowie). She was raised by a single mother, attended college as a first-generation student, and it has always been a dream of hers to be a teacher. As soon as she earned her education degree from Texas State University-San Marcos, she returned straight back home to Arlington to pursue that dream. Today, as her son Danny likes to say, Sarah is a “teacher of teachers” in Mansfield ISD. She is happily married to Dr. Chris McMurrough, a UTA engineering professor and consultant. Sarah and Chris have two sons, whom they love dearly. Danny McMurrough is a fourth grader on the autism spectrum who has shown tremendous gains thanks to early intervention and his outstanding AISD teachers and teaching assistants. Their youngest son, Henry, was born during the stay-at-home phase of the pandemic as Sarah was learning how to teach virtually and help Danny learn from home for the first time! Henry is now three years old, and next year he will attend the free, STEM-based pre-k 4 program launched during Sarah's first term as a trustee. The McMurrough family strongly values education and loves to work as a team to serve their community.
Public education is not a political pathway for Sarah; it is her life's calling. From 2008-2020, Sarah taught fourth grade at both Lynn Hale Elementary and Little Elementary in AISD. During her tenure as a classroom teacher, she served as team leader, family engagement liaison, mentor teacher, and founding sponsor of Little Ladies, a student organization devoted to empowering and promoting positive self-esteem in young girls. Since 2020, Sarah has served in a districtwide capacity as an instructional coach in Mansfield ISD. She specializes in literacy instruction and has received multiple prestigious awards over the course of her career, including:
